NIKEiD & Pendleton

In their quest to make everyone a sneaker artist/designer, Nike have certainly been pushing the boundaries lately in terms of what can be achieved using the one-of-a-kind potential of NIKEiD. Demonstrating this perfectly is this latest addition to the customisable service; a collaboration with clothing manufacturer Pendleton Woolen Mills.
There are four silhouettes available for customisation, the Air Force 1, Blazer, SB Janoski and that artist/designer favourite, the Roshe Run (shown above). Each features four variable Pendleton wool patterns, with eight suede accent colours. Additional options include a nubuck midsole for the Air Force 1, wool or classic white nylon tongue for the Blazer, leather or cotton laces for the SB Janoski and, to increase the limited edition potential of the Roshe Run, a choice of two different blocking styles.
Since a young age, São Paulo-born artist Dalton Ghetti had a knack for tools. For his 9th Birthday, Ghetti received a set of metal tools for children. This is what he believes began his love of carving and hobby for carpentry. At 24, he moved to the USA where he earned an associate of arts degree in architecture, while working as a cabinet maker. upon graduation he became employed as a home remodeller, a job which he continues doing today.

During his spare time, Ghetti enjoys carving small intricate objects our for lead pencils. His technique requires him to hold the pencil in his hand under a strong light source, carving with either a sewing needle or sharp triangular metal blade, gradually removing specks of graphite at a time. This process usually sees Ghetti working for one or two hour intervals at a time, which results in the pieces taking months, or sometimes years to complete.

Following on from his Nike Decade sneaker artworks, illustrator Stephen Cheetham has turned his attention to another important part of any sneaker collection - the sneaker box...
After some initial research and image searching, Cheetham decided upon a collection of boxes from four of the largest sneaker brands - Nike, adidas, Vans and Converse. Each print shows a collection of boxes from the early days of the brand, through to the more modern boxes that are used today - all stacked as they would be in many a sneaker collectors bedroom.
'For me it's very interesting to see how a brand has evolved over the years,' explains Cheetham, 'and the box is a key indicator of this evolution. The logos, the colours and the box construction all communicate different aspects of the brand. I wanted to show the box as a product in it's own right, away from the sneakers that it houses.'
All four Sneaker Boxes prints by Stephen Cheetham are available to purchase online (in a variety of sizes) from the excellent Print Process website now

The Dominican Republic-born photographer on documenting people’s travel habits in Monterrey, Mexico

The habits of ordinary people can be beautiful. If you wait around long enough, you might capture mundane movements and banal images of everyday life. Do it persistently and a pattern will emerge, a red thread of human behaviour will be visible. Visual poetry. It might not be how photographer Alejandro Cartagena describes his work but for all intents and purposes that’s what he’s in the business of creating. Born in the Dominican Republic but based in Mexico, Cartagena has spent the last few years documenting the travel habits of the people of Monterrey, a city in the North-East corner of Mexico. Shooting cars and trucks as they drive to work in the morning, Cartagena has been able to capture a stunning snapshot of what is probably the least exciting moment of their day. Still, the colours, texture and faces of the people, mixed with the contemporary idea of customising vehicles and the wide array of objects on display in the trucks, make for arresting imagery.
Artist Jesús Prudencio loves cars and movies, if you couldn’t tell by his beautiful series of movie posters, titled Cars and Films, that focuses on an iconic automobile from each movie. From Back to the Future to Pulp Fiction, The Shining to The Italian Job, Prudencio’s colorfully minimal illustrations are a delight for any fan of cars and/or films.
Romanian artist Ghica Popa decided to illustrate his favourite (Nike) sneakers using his very personal style; a surrealist mix of science fiction, comic book art, cubism and pop art...
In adidtion to working as an advertising agency creative director, Popa is an illustration artist based in Bucharest, Romania, with clients including the likes of Boxfresh, Orange, Ikea and Samsung.
Popa has also just completed a follow up to the initial Space Sneakers project, by illustrating a variety of sneaker silhouettes for issue 27 of Sneaker Freaker magazine - a selection of which (including the SF cover) can also be seen below
Arizona-based
photographer David Emitt Adams uses a 19th century process known as wet-plate
collodion to create tintype images on the surface of discarded tin cans found on
the desert floor. The result is an object that has history as an artifact and an
image that ties it to its location. David says of his work, "The deserts of the
West also have special significance in the history of photography. I have
explored this landscape with an awareness of the photographers who have come
before me, and this awareness has led me to pay close attention to the traces
left behind by others."

Helping to celebrate the recent Free and Flyknit footwear innovations, Nike has teamed up with digital artists Universal Everything, Daniel Widrig and Quayola+Sinigaglia to create The Art + Science of Natural Motion, an exhibition based around the principles of ‘fit’ and ‘flex’…

Originally hosted during Milan Design Week by Nike Stadium Milano, the exhibition sees the three artists interpret themes including the body in motion, technology, design, art and sport. Universal Everything’s The Art and Science of Fit explores movement with a 3D interactive experience that allows the viewer to manipulate strands of colour with the sweep of an arm. Flowing multicoloured woven patterns move freely on the large screens of a digitized cube structure, intelligently fitting to the silhouette of the visitor .

The Art and Science of Flex, by Daniel Widrig, aims to capture the essence of motion by transforming a digital artwork into the reality of a material sculpture. The artist uses animation software to create multiple snapshots of an abstract geometric figure moving in a 3D space. This snapshot is then materialised into a four meter long intricate sculpture that interprets movement and flexibility in very unexpected ways.

To complement Widrig’s work, long-time collaborators Davide Quayola and Natan Sinigaglia have created Flexure, an abstract, time-based digital sculpture that is an ever-evolving transformation of a rectangular monolith. Focusing on the physical properties of elasticity and flexibility, Flexure is a dynamic audio-visual display of movement using digital canvas.

The Art + Science of Super Natural Motion is an evolving exhibition that will travel to Tokyo, New York and London until October 2013
Following on from his MAX100 project, illustrator Matt Stevens was recently commissioned by Nike to expand upon his tribute to the Air Max 1, in a project aptly titled #AIRMAX...

Alongside Steven's personal interpretations, the underlying themes for many of the illustrations are design inspiration, colour, cultural significance and reinvention. The more obvious references to these themes include the Air Max 1's visible air unit which was inspired by The Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Air Max 90's infrared (originally labelled radiant red) colour, the Air Max 95's anatomical references and the Air Max 97's resemblence to the Japanese 'bullet' train.

Vice Australia recently asked graphic artist Mimi Leung to work alongside industrial designer Chris Ruffe on this bright and bold neon light window display for adidas Originals at the Platypus sneaker store in Melbourne…

When it came to creating the piece, Leung wanted to push the use of the neon lighting by using fluoro colours to make the display change dramatically at night. Ruffe came up with the idea of using 3D elements, and so the display was built up from three seperate layers; a printed backdrop featuring Leung’s main illustration, cut-out vinyl pieces for the various characters, and the neon lighting itself. The shoes were then placed to interact with the characters and to add to the flow and dynamism of overall the piece.

As Leung explains; ‘The idea is that these crazy, mad beings and forms (like little ghosts) are bursting out from an abstract organic form and playing with the shoes at night, when no one's looking.’ A short video documenting the production process is also shown below

Working in collaboration with Rick Williams, co-owner of Detroit Boutique Burn Rubber, under the guise of his The Distinct Life creative agency Reebok have produced this sleek new version of the ventilator. Burn Rubber has become a mecca for Detroit’s footwear fanatics, being owned and operated by lifelong sneaker heads who sought to put Detroit back on the map.
This version of the Ventilator features full grain leather uppers, lightly debossed with a camouflage pattern, tan mesh and a gum rubber outsole. A unique aspect of this distinctive shoe is the ‘BAU’ lacelock and hangtag, a reference to Williams’ affiliation to Frank the Butcher and his BAU label.
The Reebok x The Distinct Life Ventilator ‘TDL Camo’ releases 00:01am GMT 30th March 2013 via the Reebok section of END's website.

Jiro's work (which can be defined by his use of vivid colours, bold lines, voyeuristic eyeballs, brick walls and pizza) is influenced by a number of elements including a love of his motherland, Japan, nature and counter culture from the 60s, 70s and 80s - which he was heavily exposed to as a child through his father’s comic collection and older brother’s records. Shown here are some of his sneaker-related artworks (for Nike) which include a psychedelic merging of weird and wonderful characters with classic sports footwear...

You wait ages for the next in our ‘A Few of My Favourite Sneakers’ series, and then two come along at once. Following on from Matt Sewell’s recent contribution, this graphic sneaker collection (in four different colourways) was created by graphic artist Simon Peplow…
Self-professed ‘visual tinkerer’, Simon Peplow is an illustrator, designer and artist living and working in Birmingham, UK. His work has been exhibited internationally from London to Hong Kong and Portland, and his clients include the likes of The New York Times, Carhartt and Nike SB. He is also one of the founding members of artist group The Outcrowd Collective.
For the ‘A Few of My Favourite Sneakers’ project, Peplow opted to draw the shoes he wore while skateboarding in the early 90s - creating a collage of shoes rather than stand-alone images.
The sneakers featured include (clockwise from top left):
Converse Dr. J Pro Leather
Nike Tennis Classic
Airwalk 540
Vans Half Cab
adidas Gazelle
Puma Clyde
Vans Old Skool

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your artistic background? My background is in graphic design but in recent years I've focused completely on illustration, working from a shared studio space called OPEN. I've recently been working on comics for Nokia and The Times, along with a load of editorial illustration for various magazines.

What is your relationship with sneakers and/or the sneaker industry?
Up until now I have had a one way relationship with sneakers; purchasing them to run in. It has been incredible to get a look behind the scenes with this project and hopefully that's what other people will take away from it too (that and a newfound love of laser pterodactyls).

What was your brief for the Primeknit project? Did you have any input in the story itself?
U-Dox came to me with the script at a point where they were almost finished putting the final touches to it. My job was to find the best way to translate that visually in a way that would work for the film. The robots and laser pterodactyls are entirely the invention of Nick Hearne at U-Dox, but he and adidas allowed me a lot of space to interpret how they would look.

Obviously your imagery was to be knitted by the machine that makes the Primeknit shoes - were there special production processes involved (such as changing your illustrative style), and did you get to experiment with the machine at all?
We were working to a tight deadline for the project so the focus wasn't really on experimentation. The key was to get a level of detail that would work with the resolution of the knitting machine (too much detail and everything began to merge together into one knitted blob). For me it involved some intense time tweaking of individual pixels and looking at a very squashed version of my illustration (to compensate for the different height and width ratio created by the threads in the tapestry). U-Dox were always on hand to guide me through the process and to make the jump from sketchbook to final knitted image as smooth as possible.

Finally, which is your favourite part of the tapestry?
My favourite part is probably the tiny astronaut lovingly embracing the shoe. Mainly because it was the first glimpse I got of some of my artwork in tapestry form at the very first knitting test.

A Few of My Favourite Sneakers: Matt Sewell

It's been a long time coming, but at last we can show you the next in our ongoing series of 'A Few of My Favourite Sneakers'. In an interesting twist on the project concept, artist Matt Sewell (well known for his illustrations of feathered wildlife) has chosen to draw a selection of his favourite sneakers alongside birds that the sneakers remind him of. As he explains, 'Some people see faces whilst other people see cocks or tits in everything. Me, I see birds, always have. In particular I see them in cars, buildings, people and trainers...'
Sewell is an avid ornithologist, a regular contributor to Caught By The River and author of the bestselling book Our Garden Birds. He has illustrated for The Guardian, V&A, Gravis (a project we featured in the Art & Sole book), Levi's, Helly Hansen, The Big Issue and has also painted underpasses for the RSPB, and exhibited in London, Manchester, Tokyo and Paris.
Usually we ask the artists who take part in the 'A Few of My Favourite Sneakers' project to draw 10 of their favourite shoes, but, as Matt was drawing both sneakers and birds, we've made an exception to the rule meaning that he has drawn his top five shoes (with five birds).
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;">In order of appearance, the list of sneakers and birds illustrated (including the creatively-named Latin titles for both) includes:

Fila Hiker & Bullfinch
Casualia Ambulo & Pyrrhula Pyrrhula
'A girl in our year had been hanging out with bigger boys (and going to Rezerection and other raves that I wished I'd been to) and came to school in these. I thought I was cool in my Travel Fox's but these took the biscuit. Strong and bright, proper Bullfinch. I think I remember trying to talk my old man into buying me a pair but he wanted me to get a regular pair of hiking boots. Not quite the same effect really.'

Nike Air Safari & Zebra Finch
Victoria Aer Venator & Taeniopygia Guttata
'I've never had a pair of Safari's, but I have owned a Zebra Finch - loads in fact. My dad built this aviary/cage type thing in a covered over area outside of our house. They thrived for a while, had loads of lil' chicks and were the cutest of things until this sharp frost came from out of nowhere and froze them all to death. I was of course mortified and I must of repressed this horror deep down as I totally forgot that I had ever even seen a Zebra Finch, never mind owned one. Skip on twenty years, to me and my girlfriend walking around Uluru in the searing heat when suddenly I heard the very familiar tinkling/chiming sound of a flock of Zebra Finches having a great time. Everything came flooding back to me. I was gutted but it was amazing to see them in the bush, with that bell-like birdsong which helps Aborigines find water in the scorched desert. No wonder the poor buggers couldn't handle it in the frozen North-East.'

Nike Dunk SB 'Oompa Loompa' & Stonechat
Victoria Nullam Tabula Pumilio Magus & Saxicola Rubicola
'These SB's belonged to my mate Gaz in Brighton - he loved them but I was always a bit "meh". Brown and orange is always and good combo though and they do remind me of a Stonechat, so he can't be all wrong.'

Travel Fox & Goldfinch
Peregrinationes Vulpes & Carduelis Carduelis
'I had coveted these for ages until I managed to get a pair myself. I have no idea how I managed to talk my folks into forking out for these. Although now it becomes clearer, as I distinctly remember getting them from a 'budget' shoe shop in Bishop Auckland, rather than a fancy boutique. It doesn't really matter if they were knock-off or not, as I was only interested in the colours and the massive rubbery Travel Fox logo emblazoned across the sole. Ironically, I think these met their end in a bonfire misadventure where I managed to melt a nail right through one.'

Nike Meika & Blue Tit
Victoria Puteulanus Aureus Specialis & Parus Caeruleus
'God knows where I first saw these delectable rare runners. It doesn't even matter that they are the mirror image of one of my favourite birds, I just want them on my feet.'

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;">Thanks to Matt Sewell for such an inventive take on the 'A Few of My Favourite Sneakers' concept. For those interested, <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;">Matt has also created a special group print (shown bottom) which features all of the sneakers and birds shown here. Entitled 'A Few of My Feathered Sneakers', the 297 x 420mm (A3) artwork is giclée printed onto 308gsm Hahnemuhle paper and is A&S stamped for authenticity.
Le Van is a French artist who composes plastic artworks using photography to reproduce life-size and three-dimensional objects. His work focuses mainly on symbols of cultural identity, blurring the lines between art and popular culture by using brands and products to comment on the social impacts of globalisation and consumerism.
To create the artworks, Le Van photographs the subject matter from all angles, then attaches the prints to a rigid support and roughly stitches or staples the images together to create the final piece. The resulting objects are a kind of fake version of the originals, but it's this fakeness that make the artworks so interesting.
Back before every rapper out there wanted to be a sneakerhead, individual MCs were associated with one particular shoe. Snoop Dogg came on the scene rocking Chucks in classic West Coast form, Ghostface Killah proclaimed the arrival of the Wally Era, and Nelly told us all about his Air Force 1s. Four Pins ran through these rappers and more, and ranked each-apparently out of the top 2,500 rapper/shoe connections. There’s no trickery here folks. Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde sets conditions juuuust right (humidity, temperature, shoot I dunno, barometric pressure?) and then uses a fog machine to create some indoor cumulonimbus puffers. They only exist for a few seconds, but you can bet your sweet sister Susie that homie’s already got the tripod set up ready to shutter snap these white fluffies in the nick of time.

Hosted in the company's heartland of Portland, Oregon, last month saw the third iteration of the Nike Graphic Studio Art Show, an exhibition showcasing the work of 50 Nike creatives...
The Nike Graphic Studio is a creative department within Nike, working across all areas of the brand with a focus on T-shirt graphics and headwear. The studio is made up of almost 50 designers, each with their own unique style of creativity. The theme of this year's Graphic Studio Art Show was 'Outside the Box', and event organisers Chris Degaetano and Eugene Serebrennikov wanted to challenge the creatives involved to create some truly unique artworks. The resulting show, held at Gallery135, featured a variety of mixed-media pieces ranging from textural paintings, large-scale 3D installations and customised boomboxes - all of which (of course) contained sneaker related references.
In addition to the creativity on show, each event is also focused on raising money for good causes, with Nike partnering a selected charity each year. Previous shows have seen proceeds going towards relief for the Japanese Tsunami and the Self Enhancement Inc. This year it was the turn of global charity The Girl Effect, a movement aiming to unlock the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world. Vinyl figures inspired by The Girl Effect (as well as a 'sneakerhead' character) were also created especially for the exhibition and then later customised by some of the artists involved.
Offering up the final instalment from their respective Autumn/Winter 2012 collections, Japanese powerhouse SOPHNET. and their collaborative effort with Fragment Design head-honcho Hiroshi Fujiwara, Uniform Experiment, present a range of outerwear, accessories and collaborative footwear which brings a fitting end to a what have been strong collections.

SOPHNET. have teamed up with two of the most esteemed names in fashion in Tricker’s and Visvim, presenting a range of footwear which takes premium to a whole new level. Made in Northampton, England, the reworked Wing Tip Boot is a reinterpretation of a Tricker’s classic, combining both pebbled and polished leather uppers with the ever reliable goodyear welted sole. The collaboration with Visvim offers a casual alternative in the form of a ‘winterised’ iteration of the Kiefer Ki VD constructed from Italian Calf Leather and featuring an upgraded Vibram sole and hand-dyed sheepskin collar lining. The drop is rounded off by two colourways of a distinctive jacket from Uniform Experiment, taking the classic Mountain Jacket silhouette to create a robust, all-weather beating piece constructed using a rich wool and finished with a strong Leopard print lining.

Design agency Rosie Lee recently let us know about the Belle & Vidére T-light project; a hand-crafted lampshade collection featuring some great sneaker-related graphics…

London-based Belle & Vidére produce high-end lampshades that combine traditional lampshade making with modern and unlikely items. As you may have guessed, the unlikely item used in the T-light collection is that staple of everyone's wardrobe, the T-shirt. Ingeniously, the T-light collection is actually a bespoke service where old-but-loved T-shirts can be both made use of, while at the same time proudly displayed. Shown below are some vintage sneaker-related classics that have been given the T-light treatment...
As Belle & Vidére explain; ‘Some love their T-shirts because of their association with a specific time of their lives, others simply love the graphic. Whatever the reason, the T-light provokes a little love and sense of humour for the past or for the present.’
While researching an upcoming art project, we came across this collaboration between Clarks Originals and the JaguarShoes Collective. Although not strictly a story about ‘sneakers’, we’ve featured Clarks before on this blog and we have a feeling we’ll be featuring them again. The brand certainly seems to have an affinity with artists/designers and sneaker wearers alike…
Based in East London, the JaguarShoes Collective is an arts organisation that collaborates with illustrators, designers and brands to create unique products, exhibitions and events. In August of this year they saw the release of their very own Clarks Originals Desert Boot; a collaboration using a ‘modern vintage’ colour pallette which was derived from the original signage that hangs above the doors of DreamBagsJaguarShoes (the collective’s flagship space). The boots feature a slim sole, corduroy suede uppers and a red and cream striped leather lining.
In an artistic twist to the collaboration, JaguarShoes also added some novel British-themed socks into the mix, meaning that each pair of boots comes with a pair of limited edition artist-designed socks. With a nod to mass-market ‘novelty’ socks, Chrissie Abbott has designed a ‘Rain & Shine’ repeat pattern for women, and McBess has created a ‘Plates of Meat’ design for men. The boots also come wrapped in bespoke tissue paper, designed by the respective artists, and all of this is presented in a specially designed Clarks Originals box.
The launch party for the event (a few images of which can also be seen below) was held at the recently refurbished East London JaguarShoes venue, the Old Shoreditch Station.
The Clarks Originals & JaguarShoes Desert Boots are available now from Clarks, the JaguarShoes Collective and select retail stores nationwide. Via Art&Sole
