Mimi Leung & adidas

  Mimi Leung & adidas

Vice Australia recently asked graphic artist Mimi Leung to work alongside industrial designer Chris Ruffe on this bright and bold neon light window display for adidas Originals at the Platypus sneaker store in Melbourne…
When it came to creating the piece, Leung wanted to push the use of the neon lighting by using fluoro colours to make the display change dramatically at night. Ruffe came up with the idea of using 3D elements, and so the display was built up from three seperate layers; a printed backdrop featuring Leung’s main illustration, cut-out vinyl pieces for the various characters, and the neon lighting itself. The shoes were then placed to interact with the characters and to add to the flow and dynamism of overall the piece.
As Leung explains; ‘The idea is that these crazy, mad beings and forms (like little ghosts) are bursting out from an abstract organic form and playing with the shoes at night, when no one's looking.’ A short video documenting the production process is also shown below

Belle & Vidére T-lights

Design agency Rosie Lee recently let us know about the Belle & Vidére T-light project; a hand-crafted lampshade collection featuring some great sneaker-related graphics…

London-based Belle & Vidére produce high-end lampshades that combine traditional lampshade making with modern and unlikely items. As you may have guessed, the unlikely item used in the T-light collection is that staple of everyone's wardrobe, the T-shirt. Ingeniously, the T-light collection is actually a bespoke service where old-but-loved T-shirts can be both made use of, while at the same time proudly displayed. Shown below are some vintage sneaker-related classics that have been given the T-light treatment...
As Belle & Vidére explain; ‘Some love their T-shirts because of their association with a specific time of their lives, others simply love the graphic. Whatever the reason, the T-light provokes a little love and sense of humour for the past or for the present.’

Step right up for the Bill Murray colouring book!

Tm-front-cover

Sometimes a combination is so darn perfect that you weep for the sheer perfection of cosmic coming togethers – salt and vinegar, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Friday and beers. So when I heard about the brilliant new project by belly kids – The Bill Murray colouring book, I quickly added it to that perfect combinations list.
Thrill Murray is aimed at “the young, old, middle aged, bored, hyped or mildly interested” giving all and sundry the chance to bring to life the man, the myth, who “has stolen the hearts of a generation in a million and one films which have become essentials on the indie film DVD shelf.” There’s a whole host of illustrators involved rendering old Bill in all sorts of ways, but this is a project where the consituent parts almost matter less than the supremely wonderful overall concept. 'Thrill Murray' is released in August by bellykids.co.uk

Remi Rough & Pimp My Sneaker

Straight off the back of London’s larget mural, street artist Remi Rough has helped to curate an Australian sneaker-art exhibition featuring the work of 20 international artists...

Featuring sneaker artworks by Remi Rough, Dabs Myla, Fantome, Mr Penfold, Prefab77 and SheOne. Visit the Chadstone website to see more detailed images of all the shoes created for the project, plus additional interviews with the artists. Chadstone are also running two competitions alongside the project; the first to create the inspiration (by making a Pinterest board) for a Remi Rough mural in Melbourne, and the second to win the original custom sneakers from the show.
